  • ABSTRACT: The paper examines the socio-economic position and the everyday reality of the life of slaves in Lydia and Phrygia, two regions of considerable size within the boundaries of the Roman province of Asia, during the first three centuries of our era. The sources available for the study of slavery in Roman Anatolia are mainly epigraphic monuments, though some ancient writers and anepigraphic archaeological finds offer significant insights as well. The impression gained by the study of this material suggests that slavery was widespread and that it permeated both private life and public institutions, though exact numbers of slaves and their economic significance is difficult to determine.

    • Ivan LAKOVIĆ, Crnogorska Policija u Očima Posmatrača OEBS 1997-2006. godine, 83-103    DOWNLOAD

ABSTRACT: On the base of reports by the relevant body of the OSCE Mission in then Serbia and Montenegro, the paper deals with the topic of perception of Montenegrin police forces and their reformation by the OSCE experts assigned for this area. The article covers the period on the verge of centuries, when Montenegro acquired the new political course towards closer bonding with the West. Finally resulting in changing the status of its statehood, social and political processes of this time were directed and conducted by governmental authorities who dominantly relied upon the use of police forces and the control over them. In this sense, perception of the such police in the eyes of representatives of international community, among which the OSCE’s ones had the most direct contact, brings an insight into the contemporary conditions, problems, perspectives and possibilities of reform within the one of the most important tools the Montenegrin government had at its disposal.

ABSTRACT: Montenegro’s political transformation from communism to liberal democracy was marked by remarkable political and social developments all of which severely damaged democratic consolidation and political transformation. Instead of following the pattern of other Central/ Eastern European states, Montenegro was deadlocked with an unresolved national question and fragile democratic framework; prolongation of fundamental emancipation of society and state. The article examines major political developments starting the dissolution of Yugoslavia and the introduction of pluralism, and their implications on political and societal transformations in Montenegro.

ABSTRACT: This work is motivated by the desire and need to present to the academic public and the wider readership an illustration of lesser-known tadhkirah (Ottoman tezkire) that have been neglected in our historiography. Teskere of Ottoman provenance stored in the Archives of the Historical Institute of Montenegro are an important source of knowledge when it comes to studying the history of Montenegro. These dated documents from the second half of the 18th century, which we publish here, testify to the manner of appointing the village prince and the collection of taxes during the Ottoman rule. In fact, they are important for the local history of Crmnička nahiyah, because they provide us with reliable information on the manner of official communication between the local population and the competent Ottoman authorities.

Abstract: This work presents new information about the ciborium from the Kotor cathedral of St. Tryphon, for which a part of the scientific world believes it does not represent a whole, but rather fragments of several related ciboria. We attempt to answer the question as to whom this ciborium was dedicated and when it was erected. By analysing the available sources, it can be concluded that the ciborium was constructed during the eighth decade of the 12th century, back in the days of bishop Nikephoros II and that it was dedicated to the Kotor saints Andrew, Peter and Lawrence.

ABSTRACT: Opening new areas and perspectives, multidisciplinary researches make it possible to review the existing historical knowledge. Paradigm poliphonicity is of importance not only for an integrating EuropeMediterranean present, but also for the national history and the diversity of its coexisting identities. The principles of Iberian epic from the late sixteenth century, triggered by the battle of Lepanto, reconfirmed the renaissance prestige and attractiveness of the heroic-patriotic genre, as well as of imperial ideology. The urban centers of the Montenegrin Littoral are significantly represented in the considered works, contextualizing, beside Venetian illustrative and descriptive solutions, the relating strategies and discourses.

    • Saša BRAJOVIĆ, Re-prezentacije Crnogoraca Teodora Valerioa, 71-82  DOWNLOAD

ABSTRACT: Special attention was given to the presentations Famille monténégrine pleurant ses morts après un combat à l’entrée du monastère de Cettigne, Les Monténégrins se rendant au marché de Kotor and Le prêtre monténégrin en uniforme de combat, portant le drapeau de l’eglisé, created during the seventh decade of 19th century by the French artist Théodore Valério. Valério’s drawings and copper etchings modelled after them, as well as aquarelles, paintings on canvas and illustrations published in popular European magazines, display Montenegrins in a truthful manner, but also in accordance with concepts shaped within the Orientalist discourse. This is why it is emphasised that these presentations must be perceived as constructions unifying the documentary precision and imagination of the Western European understanding of the so called Orient. The analysed presentations, said in the language of contemporary literary and visual theories, are representations, i.e. representations expressing a complex relation between the observed and the observer, the connection between the truthful, the presented and what is expected from the presented. Within such a methodological framework, this text strives to answer the question asked already in 1940 by a professor and once the Director of the Historical Institute of Montenegro, Andrija Lainović: did Valério really see what he presented or are these “exotic” curiosities?

Abstract: Various archival sources in the Bay of Kotor treasure information on popular religious rituals that were condemned as sinful during 17th and 18th centuries. Throughout the normative literature, such as catechisms and sermons, people susceptible to “sinful madness of magic” were severely criticized. At the same time, veneration of relics and other sacred objects became more carefully supervised, following the posttridentine regulations on practiced religion. The aim of this paper is to propose several examples of “unofficial” piety, emphasizing the flexible border between notions of religion and magic, as well as visual, somatic and verbal features shared between discussed objects and reliquaries in the Bay of Kotor.

Abstract: Based on archival material, the author addresses the issue of the presence and possible influence of the Venetians on the legal and economic life of the 14th century Kotor. Special attention has been paid to their legal influence, overseas wholesale trade, healthcare and crafts in the city. The study has been divided into seven sections. The first two sections following the introduction examine the legal impact that the Venetian notaries performing this service in Kotor could have had on the creation of medieval Kotor statutory law. Since they were educated at Italian universities from which they had knowledge of the rules on the received Roman law and legal standards of notarial documents and their significance, it is important to examine the degree of this influence in terms of both normativity and application. The fourth section deals with the contribution of Venetian merchants to the economic power of the town, which was, among other things, based on the overseas wholesale trade with influential Venetian trading families, thanks to which Kotor was known as one of the most important ports in the east Adriatic. The fifth part features an analysis of numerous contracts shedding light on the private practice of Venetian doctors, notaries, and craftsmen and their contribution to life in general in the town. Section 6 deals with an analysis of litigations conducted in Kotor concerning failure to comply with contractual obligations to Venetians and explains them in the context of the application of ius commune, which was the legal basis for all statutory rights of the medieval communes in the Mediterranean.

Abstract: In the introductory chapter the author shortly reviewed canon law rules which defined and regulated the episcopal elections in the period from the 11th to the end of the 14th century. A number of biographies of clerics whose promotion to the top of the ecclesiastical career (episcopal election) on the territory of Venetian Dalmatia, illustrate the system of papal provision as well as the influence the Venetian Senate had on their career formation and the episcopal election. The older Croatian scholarship asserted that by electing candidates who would be favourable to its governement, the Venetian Republic had influenced the episcopal appointments in Dalmatian dioceses from the early 1420s, when it took over the dominion over the Eastern Adriatic coast. However, the process of episcopal appointments went rather slowly and gradually, following the strict canon law rules. Documents kept in the Vatican Secret Archives indicate that the popes widely used their right of provision based on canon law rules to appoint „their men“ and decidedly refused proposals coming from the Venetian Senate. Indeed, out of 63 bishops appointed in the nine Dalmatian dioceses under Venetian dominion, 46 were prelates of Venetian orgin, coming either from Venice or the Veneto region, whereas only seven of them came from the Papal State. On the other hand, bishops of Dalmatian origin were only 17.

Abstract: The 126 dispatches sent from Zara to Venice by Alvise Foscari, general Superintendent in Dalmatia and Albania, during his mandate (1777-1780) do not contain, at a time of apparent calm in the Adriatic and the Balkans, references to events of “great politics”. However, they represent a wealth of information particularly illuminating because they are coming from a Venetian nobleman in charge of the government of his overseas subjects, on the relationship between the Capital and the Provinces of the Dominio da Mar and the state of health of the Republic in the last twenty years of his glorious existence.

The research was based on the analysis of the original archival material from the Bishop’s Archives in Kotor, the books of the Church of St. Tryphon. By inspecting the above mentioned material, the time span of the census, the ways of identification, and the gender and professional structure of the immigrants are presented and analyzed. Finally, the share of Montenegrin immigrants in each book of births (births, weddings and deaths) is analyzed, with an emphasis on displaying topics from the social everyday life of the population.

This territory can not be inhabited by those who are rooted in one language and in one nation. Tommaseo stated that the time of the queens and masters of the universe – like that of revolutionary France- had passed, even because of the polycentrism and polyphony of the European civilization. Indeed, European civilization is a set of various civilizations which constist of a „discordant diversity” and an „harmonic variety” put together in one civilization. KEY WORDS: Niccolò Tommaseo, Adriatic koinè, Dalmatia, Italians and Slavs, polycentric and polyphonic civilization

ABSTRACT: In the Boka Kotorska Bay, fishing is one of the oldest occupations, based on the coastal lifestyle of its inhabitants. Unfortunately, few documents detailing the fishery traditions have been preserved, and oral traditions can be dated back only to the 19th century. The fishing net has been a key invention in fisheries. It is made up of netting of varying mesh size, formed by knotting of the threads. Besides the fishing net, the fishing boat is an essential tool in fisheries. Depending on the type of fisheries, various types of gear were used — fishing nets (gillnets, trammel nets, beach seines, purse seines and towed nets), long–lines (set or drifting), harpoon, pots and traps.
